Solar power has seen a resurgence over the last 10 years. As the technology has become cheaper and more efficient at generating electricity, it finally become economical to install on personal homes. Today, solar power comprises just 3% of the United State’s total electricity, but it has the potential to generate so much more. So what would it take to power the United States entirely with solar power?

As it turns out, not much! The U.S. would need just 22,000 square miles of land with solar panels on them to power the entire country. That’s smaller than the size of West Virginia! But the true power of solar energy lies in its ability to exist without its own land. Because solar energy can simply be mounted to rooftops, it provides an extra layer of versatility to an already pretty impressive piece of technology.
